Original story (10/18/19 at 10:02 a.m.):
The Project Runway family has tragically lost one of its own.
Mychael Knight, a fan favorite who competed on Season 3 of the hit competition show, has passed away at the age of 39.
And the details of his untimely death are heartbreaking.
Mychael was certainly a stand-out on his season, eventually getting to show his collection at New York Fashion Week and coming in fourth place overall (Jeffrey Sebelia took home the top prize that year).
And though he didn't win, he did take home the coveted Fan Favorite Award that season, and went on to compete on Project Runway: All Stars Season 3 in 2009.
Now, however, the talented designer's life has been cut short, as he passed away at an Atlanta hospital on Tuesday, October 17.
“We are still processing the untimely death of our son, brother, friend, and uncle," reads his family's official statement.
"Mychael meant everything to us and we loved him dearly. He was generous and so full of life. This is how we choose to remember his legacy.”
The young talent suffered from chronic abdominal pain, exhaustion and fatigue in the time leading up to his death, and was reportedly hospitalized with intestinal issues just hours before he passed away, according to TMZ.
The site reports Mychael was also suffering from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) for five years, though it's unclear if the ailment was related to his death.
Though host Heidi Klum, mentor Tim Gunn, and then-judges Nina Garcia and Michael Kors haven't commented publicly on the former constestant's passing, the official Project Runway Facebook page sent the Knight family their condolences:
Mychael, who was just 28 when he competed on the show in 2006, had gone on to design for Starbucks and eventually released his own line, MajK.
And as recently as September 2017, he teamed up with fellow Season 3 finalist Korto Momolu at New York Fashion Week for a collection and after party they dubbed "The MK/KM Experience."
Korto has been posting about her beloved friend since the news broke yesterday, sharing this sweet tribute on Instagram in which she reflected back on some of her best memories with Mychael.
This is a post I never wanted to make and it's still unbelievable that it's happening. My head hurts ..my heart Hurts..idk. So I met this beautiful soul on my tv screen during his season on @projecteunway 3 and as God would have it in person just a week shy of my own audition for the show. He gave me great advice and told me what I needed to know to push forward to do the show. Years later we met up again and did 2 stints of @projectrunwayallstars , a countless amount of fashion shows and many phone calls just connecting our souls. We referred to each other as brother and sister from another mother and always had each other's back. When he called and asked me to show together for fashion week SS18 it was a no brainer.. so we did ..not knowing it would be our last time together. His last show..Today I lost someone I truly called my FRIEND...My confidante..My supporter..My Homie.. and I'm going to miss him sooooo much. In our last text last week he said he was getting better and stronger and I was happy to hear that. I'm devastated and saddened and Pray his angel wings are made of the finest Knight approved neoprene fit for a fashion king. Mycheal you inspired many young african American designers like myself to be Great with Class and Dignity and I thank you for that. I miss you ..I love you .. until we meet again my friend Xoxo Korto
