Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten) went on a nasty bender in the Nashville Season 2 finale after finding out that longtime love Rayna Jaymes’ (Connie Britton) daughter, Maddie Conrad, is actually his biological child. His decision to hit the bottle then led to a serious car crash that closed out the ABC drama’s first season. We already know that Rayna, though comatose in the premiere, seemingly makes a full recovery, but how does Deacon fair after the life-altering accident?

Physically, we’ve already told you that Deke’s career could be jeopardized because of an injury he sustained in the crash, and now we know he will be suffering emotionally as well.

As showrunner Dee Johnson explains to TVLine, the crash puts things into perspective for the struggling musician. “God, if this doesn’t wake you up, I don’t know what would,” she says. “That doesn’t mean he comes out of it singing about sunshine and lollipops, but he definitely feels for what happened and takes responsibility for what happened.”

We’re glad Deacon is man enough to take full responsibility for his actions, but given Rayna’s bevy of potential suitors that have recently been cast, it’s obvious that the country music superstar has already moved on. Ouch.
