The tension between star-crossed former lovers Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten) and Rayna James (Connie Britton) is part of what makes Nashville one of our favorite fall shows.

But how will their relationship unfold? First, Rayna cancels her tour. Then Deacon starts a relationship with Juliette (Hayden Panettiere). If Rayna and Deacon were hoping to get together, those were bad first steps.

“For the first time, Deacon and Rayna don’t have each other in the way they have had before,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It won’t stay that way forever, I’m sure. Deacon knows what Rayna’s facing and what she has to do but he’s angry now and he’s been hurt a little too much.”

They may be facing tough times now, but as we’ve seen, Deacon has a hard time setting boundaries with his ex-flame.

“That’s always hard to do,” said Charles. “I imagine he’ll set some in his mind and put some forth but when he’s around her, it’s Rayna and she’s got the deepest hold on his heart.”

And as for Deacon’s relationship with Juliette jeopardizing things? Charles says they’ve only scratched the surface with that pairing.

“[Rayna] can’t say much, she’s married!” he explained. “She always expects more out of Deacon and thinks so little of Juliette even though Deacon has gotten to know her... Rayna doesn’ t understand it yet and it’s a strange but interesting dynamic between Juliette and Deacon.”
