Juliette Barnes may appear to be simply a man-eating diva, but Hayden Panettiere insists that her Nashville character has a depth that may surprise viewers.

“I don’t find a draw in playing someone who’s just pure evil,” Hayden said to TVLine. "Juliette is a survivor, and that’s interesting to me."

In fact, she thinks Juliette and rival Rayna James (Connie Britton) have a whole lot in common.

“They're both strong women; they’re both kind of rebels. She’s running away from her family, and I’ve run away from mine... If they didn’t happen to be in each other’s way at the moment, they would probably be good friends.”

As for Juliette’s tendency to seduce any man she sees? Hayden explains that it’s a byproduct of her character’s damaged life and her attempt to do “anything to fill the void.” The premiere revealed that Juliette’s mother is a drug addict, whom the singer struggles to keep out of her gilded life.

Ultimately, Hayden hopes fans of the show will liken Juliette to another beloved TV anti-hero.

“I know this is the most out-there comparison, but I want her to be like House [Hugh Laurie’s TV doctor], because he’s such an ass but you respect him because he’s so good at what he does,” she said.

Strange, yes, but it’s not a bad character aspiration by any means!
