Do you remember that one time when you were a super famous guitar player and your ex-girlfriend checked you into rehab and then went and got married? UGH. That was the PITS, areweright? Just ask Nashville’s resident brooder, Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten), who one day was riding high (drunk, high, semantics) as Rayna Jaymes’s (Connie Britton) main man in every way, and the next, was hearing about her walk down the aisle with Teddy Conrad (Eric Close). Bum. Mer.

Well, here’s the thing: it’s been twelve years since that went down, and, although the two have collaborated since then on everything from songwriting to “songwriting,” Deacon chose Season 1, Episode 11 “You Win Again,” to make it awkward. After being falsely represented in print, he starts to spiral out of control, blowing off his commitment to Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) to be her mother’s keeper, and then lashing out at everyone.

After TWELVE YEARS of keeping quiet (all the best brooders are), he finally confronts Rayna about losing faith in him. And while we can’t blame a guy for crying over spilt whiskey, that has to be way past the statute of limitations for bitterness.

Later, when Juliette bashes in his door and comes in the house, Deacon gives her an earful about her responsibilities to her mom as she stands holding the remains of the guitar he smashed (“It was out of tune.” Funny.). In the last scene, he boards Juliette’s plane, throws some shade Rayna’s way, puts on his aging hipster glasses and waits for the sweet blanket of awkward revenge to tuck him in.

Up to this episode, he’s always seemed damaged but largely functional and completely good-hearted. Do you think this new side of him will stick around? Was he being more dickish than necessary, or is all his ‘tude warranted? Hit the comments below and tell us what you think.
