We consider ourselves pretty great at keeping track of all the nuances on Nashville, but sometimes it’s nice to phone a friend — or pull one aside to get a little insight. At the 2013 TCA Winter Press Tour, Wetpaint Entertainment spoke exclusively with Charles Esten (Deacon Claybourne) to talk about Deacon and Rayna’s (Connie Britton) history, and where they’ll go from here.
When we first met them, they were playing music together, and had been for a couple decades. And although they had a romantic history, that was supposedly all in the past, having ended when Rayna decided she couldn’t be with Deacon while he had substance abuse issues. While Deacon was in rehab, Rayna met and married Teddy (Eric Close), but has since headed down the road to divorce. And, although Deacon had a brief fling with Juliette (Hayden Panettiere), he is single these days — and ready to mingle. There’s also the minor detail that Deacon may or may not be father to Rayna’s daughter Maddie (Lennon Stella)...
Despite their romantic and business past, it just seems a little nuts that Deacon has stuck around so long. Chip gave us some insight, saying “Well, there's a lot of different reasons. I think the first and most romantic is that she's just the one for him, whether he's the one for her, or whether it ever works out, she’s just that one. The one that got away, and got away because he was a fool. I let her go.”
Their past is certainly coming back in waves, and will continue to because of all their history. “They were there on the ground floor together, and I think it was just that deep of a love. So it's hard to let that go, like it's hard to let anything go.” So, now that Rayna is about to be single and Deacon has perspective on / distance from his addictions, will they get back together?
“She's been very good,” Charles says of Rayna. “She hasn't crossed the line. She's walked the line, but she hasn't crossed it. But that's been hard for her too. That's the stress.” While Rayna has restrained herself for the most part, she did kiss him back in the elevator in Episode 12. But before you start crafting their celeb name mashup (which is Raycon, BTW. Way better than the much less masculine Deayna...), from what we’ve seen and heard, Deacon is about to wander down a whole ‘nother romantic pathway.
What does it all mean for Rayna and Deacon? We’re not sure yet, but we can’t wait to find out.
