On Nashville, Clare Bowen plays sweet drawlin’ waitress Scarlett O’Connor, an aw-shucks Southern girl with admirers for days who has only recently been discovered. So, does art imitate life? Well, sort of. In real life, Clare is an Australian actress who has a ton of credits to her name.
So, how did she bridge the gap between Aussie movies and American TV? With American movies, of course. “I came into the casting with Scarlett as she is,” Clare tells People. “My dad used to bring home videos from LA, and my favorites were Steel Magnolias, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Song of the South. So, I learned Scarlett from copying those when I was really little. So, she’s sort of an amalgamation of my three favorite films.”
As for what’s happening in the character’s life, change is coming and we’ll have to see how that goes. She recently broke up with Avery Barkley (Jonathan Jackson) and then found out that singing partner Gunnar Scott (Sam Palladio) was into her. “Her and Avery had beautiful chemistry and they loved each other very much. But then he turned on her and she saw another side of him. It kills chemistry, jealousy.” So that’s that for the two exes.
But what about her other singing friend, Gunnar? “When she sang that song, I think she discovered something that she couldn’t control, standing next to Gunnar up there and singing to each other. And she’d never been able to express that kind of emotion that she does in that song.”
As for Clare’s favorite Nashville song? We’d have to agree that the first cut was the deepest, with “If I Didn’t Know Better” still making us all weak in the knees.
