Nashville packs so many amazing song performances into each episode that it’s hard to keep track of them all. And while we love each and every one, life is all about choices, so here are our top 5 music moments from Season 1, Episode 2: “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You).” (Psst! You can buy them all here!)
5. Avery and his band sing “Twist of Barbed Wire”
Okay, so we’re not fans of the fact that Avery (Jonathan Jackson) is standing in the way of Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) getting together. But if you think we’re gonna complain about seeing Avery onstage with his band, looking all sweaty and angsty, then you’re way off. (What can we say? Sweat is sexy.) No wonder the dude has so many groupies! Oh, yeah — and the song was pretty good, too, but that’s a minor detail.
4. Juliette records a video for “Telescope” — causing Rayna to get stuck in traffic!
Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) isn’t a fan of this video, and sure, it’s a little ridiculous that she’s trying to look all sexy while leaning back on the giant leg of some statue in white jean cutoffs. (Isn’t that what you do to look sexy?) But we loved this moment mainly because of how Rayna (Connie Britton) reacts when she realizes that Juliette is the reason for the traffic. Plus, the song is fun and bouncy, all about using a telescope. Who knew Juliette was so into astronomy?
3. Gunnar performs “I’ll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)” in front of Scarlett.
We’re big fans of Scarlett and Gunnar (Team Garlett for the win!), so we love the look on Scarlett face as she first sees a more confident Gunnar onstage with his band. As for us, we didn’t think Gunnar could be any more adorable, but we were wrong. He looked pinch-ably cute in that white hat and shirt with roses on it. If you ask us, Gunnar can totally pull off fringe.
2. Juliette and Deacon work on “Undermine.”
Juliette can come up with a song that tugs at our heartstrings? Who knew! We’ve seen Deacon have some amazing chemistry with Rayna, and now he does the same with Juliette while working on “Undermine” in her pickup. (Maybe Deacon just has chemistry with everyone he meets?) And we’re impressed that Juliette can stay focused on songwriting for as long as she does, since her top choice of things to do with Deacon is apparently skinny dipping.
1. Rayna and Deacon sing “No One Will Ever Love You” — and we bawl uncontrollably.
Was there any doubt that this emotional powerhouse would top the list? Of course not. This song gives us more of a glimpse at the undeniable connection between Rayna and Deacon than any scene prior to it —which would explain why Juliette spend the entire performance sending eye-daggers to the two of them. And speaking of eyes, if this song’s moving harmonies and melancholic lyrics didn’t have you in tears, you may want to consult an optometrist.
