Jennifer Lopez to Star in NBC Cop Drama — Is She Leaving American Idol? (VIDEO)

She's still Jenny from the block, and pretty soon, she's going to be Jenny on the beat the police beat, that is. American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez is set to star in a new NBC cop drama but does this mean she's planning to quit the Fox singing competition?

J-Lo will star in drama series Shades of Blue, and NBC has already given the show a 13-episode straight-to-series order, meaning the show didn't even need to film a pilot episode first. The series is likely to go into production in 2015, which the plan being that it will premiere in the fall of that year, not in fall 2014.

The show is being written by the screenwriter of 3 Days to Kill, the Kevin Costner thriller that just hit theaters this weekend. Jennifer will play a single mother and detective who goes undercover for the FBI's anti-corruption unit. Its being produced by J-Lo's American Idol pal, Ryan Seacrest, who apparently helped bring her onboard.

"The script is so powerful and ambitious we can’t wait to see Jennifer take on this remarkable role," says The Crest himself. This will be Jen's first lead scripted-TV role since becoming a star, although she has had guest spots on Will & Grace and How I Met Your Mother. She also produces ABC Family's The Fosters.

But what does this mean for her future with American Idol? Well, given that Ryan Seacrest is involved in the NBC show, we're guessing J-Lo will be able to remain with Idol. Then again, given how anemic Idol's ratings have been this season, who knows if the show will even still exist by fall of 2015.

We think this cop show sounds perfect for Jennifer, who excelled as a cop in the 1998 film Out of Sight. Plus, we're excited to see her move away from her more typical rom-com fare into something a bit grittier. Heck, starring as a cop in HBO's True Detective has certainly worked out for her Wedding Planner co-star Matthew McConaughey, right?

Do you think you'll watch her cop show?
