NBC Plans Next Live Musical Event — It’s the Music Man!
There's trouble… right here on NBC! The network announced the next live musical event beaming straight onto your screens. Drumroll please! No. 3 is... The Music Man!
A far cry from World War II and hills alive with the sound of music, this Tony Award-winning play follows con man Harold Hill as he fools a town into thinking he’s a musician who can help them out of their latest pinch. Matthew Broderick played the role in the most recent TV adaptation, a 2003 movie broadcast on ABC, with Kristin Chenoweth starring Marian, the librarian that Harold really wants to check out. You know, instead of a book.
When NBC’s take on the 1957 classic airs at some as yet unreleased date, The Music Man will be the network’s third trip down the musical path. The first, The Sound of Music, brought in an audience of more than 20 million, giving the peacock channel a boost the size of which it hadn’t seen for more than a decade. Next up is Peter Pan, set to air this December and not, despite rumors, starring Miley Cyrus.
Will Music Man prove as successful? We think that’ll come down to casting. Carrie Underwood was initially a questionable pick for the lead in Sound of Music but eventually brought in the viewers. Could another American Idolalum be the secret to success? Or, even better, a judge? Harry Connick, Jr., we think you’d look great in '50s pinstripes. Now, which lucky lady will be donning the sexy librarian getup?
