Tom Brokaw Diagnosed With Cancer — Journalism Icon Continues Working

Famous journalist Tom Brokaw had sad news to report today: He’s battling cancer. The NBC legend, who just turned 74 on February 6, tells fans that despite the upsetting development, his physicians are encouraged by his progress and he’s still “the luckiest guy I know.”

Tom is battling multiple myeloma, a cancer that targets the blood cells of bone marrow. He received the diagnosis last August at the Mayo Clinic and has been receiving treatment. Throughout it all, he’s kept working for NBC, where he’s been since 1966.

Tom’s recent projects include a two-hour documentary on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He’s also stopped by TODAY, Meet The Press, and Nightly News With Brian Williams and is currently helping cover the 2014 Winter Olympics for NBC Sports.

Tom released a personal statement earlier today addressing the matter.

“With the exceptional support of my family, medical team, and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come,” he wrote. “I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter.”

Our thoughts are with Tom as he and his family face this battle together.
