NBC Greenlights Wizard of Oz Series, Emerald City

ABC has Once Upon a Time and its spin-off, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, and now rival network NBC has given the go ahead for a fairytale-esque pilot of its own set in the Land of Oz. The show, appropriately titled Emerald City, has been given a 10-episode order for the first season from the peacock and will focus on a 20-year-old Dorothy — hopefully with Toto by her side.

The series will take a more modern look at L. Frank Baum’s famous fictional world and, per Huffington Post, Dorothy will “find herself in the middle of a bloody battle for control of the magical land.”

Siberia creator Josh Friedman is behind the highly anticipated project, which NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt called “epic” and “thrilling” during the network’s TCA press tour earlier this month.

While Siberia failed to entice audiences, the surreal world Josh Friedman created proves that he could be a great fit to lead Emerald City to success. Robert Greenblatt also noted that Emerald has plans to introduce familiar characters as well as new faces that audiences aren’t acquainted with yet.

If it’s successful, there’s also hope that Emerald will go beyond its initial 10-episode order. Carrying the series beyond 10 episodes shouldn’t be a problem for Josh Friedman and his staff considering the depth of the source material. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
