Neil Patrick Harris does a lot of skin-baring on the cover of Rolling Stone — as the nude coverboy for the May 22 issue — and a lot of soul-baring within the pages of the issue.

First thing's first: that head-turning cover. The 40-year-old star of stage and screen is completely naked in the image — shot by salacious celeb photographer Terry Richardson — except for a bowtie around his neck and a top hat covering his business. We're not sure that this use of formal wear is what his How I Met Your Mother character meant by the directive "Suit up."

But once you can bring yourself to crack open the magazine, Neil is just as revealing in the article.

Neil — who currently lights up Broadway as the titular gender-variant rock singer in Hedwig and the Angry Inch — talks about his experience growing up gay and closeted in New Mexico, not really knowing what to do about his sexuality or whether it would change as an adult.

It didn't change, though, and since coming out eight years ago, he's not only happier in his life but more successful in his career. "I'm intoxicated and turned on by people who are really honest about themselves," he tells Rolling Stone (per Us Weekly). "And so the coming-out process, given that, is a great move. Because people know that you're sexual and that's who you like, and you're not guarded and sketchy and awkward."

Neil also discusses honesty in regards to getting laid — and he doesn't mince his words: "No one likes an awkward lay. You want to lay someone who wants to lay you; you want to say who you like and get to lay that person. That's good sex. You don't want to lay some girl that you're supposed to lay, who you don't like, but you don't want anyone to know that. Like, neither person is having good sex. You might as well beat off."

Wow! Now we're wondering: Is he gunning for a endorsement day with Lays?
