For weeks now NeNe Leakes has been teasing us on social media about some big project, and now we finally know what the Real Housewives of Atlanta star has been vaguely referring to: She’s headed to Broadway!
Our girl NeNe excitedly tweeted the news yesterday, complete with a link to an article that includes all the pertinent details of her B’Way debut. Per Broadway.com, NeNe will be playing the role of Cinderella's wicked stepmother, Madame, beginning November 25, 2014. She’ll be playing the part until the musical’s final scheduled performance of January 3, 2015.
NeNe will be taking over the iconic part from former The View host Sherri Shepherd, who will be playing Madame from September 9 through November 22. Actress Keke Palmer will also be making her debut on September 9, playing the production’s titular character until the show closes in January.
We never pegged NeNe as a Broadway babe, but she seems understandably psyched about her latest gig. On September 3 the reality star tweeted, “It's official! I am headed 2 BROADWAY CINDERELLA Nov 25th. Ain't God good 2 a little black girl from Athens Ga.” While we might be a bit wary of NeNe’s musical expertise, it’s important to remember that, like or not, this gal is a bona fide performer. She played the Mistress of Sensuality earlier this summer in Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity, and by all accounts she did a fantastic job.
The production’s current cast also includes Joe Carroll as Prince Topher, Victoria Clark as the Fairy Godmother, Ann Harada as stepsister Charlotte, Stephanie Gibson as stepsister Gabrielle, Peter Bartlett as Sebastian, Prince Topher's mentor and Lord Chancellor, Todd Buonopane as the rebel Jean-Michel, and Phumzile Sojola as Lord Pinkleton. Pretty impressive company, NeNe!
No word yet on if NeNe’s Broadway debut will make it into RHoA Season 7, which is currently in production, but we’re crossing our fingers!
