In a pre-taped interview, Aretha Franklin sat down with Al Roker to talk about the passing of music legend Whitney Houston, and Part 1 aired on this morning's (February 17, 2012) Today show. And, while it was heartbreaking to hear about the time she first met a doe-eyed, young Whitney, we couldn't help but do a double-take when she dropped the knowledge that she is, in fact, not Whitney Houston's godmother, but more her honorary aunt.
The clarification is touched upon very briefly in the interview, with Al and Aretha moving on quickly to another topic. Strange, considering media outlets have been referring to Aretha as Whitney's godmother for years, way before her untimely death put their relationship in the spotlight. So why is no one making a bigger deal out of this revelation? Why aren't outlets making up for their years of misreporting with a correction? Because, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter.
Aretha and Whitney shared a special bond, one that the Queen of Soul seems to look back on fondly, and one that fans love to hear about in memorializing their fallen idol. Which begs the question: Does it really need a label at all?
