Awkward's Brett Davern on The Jake-Jenna-Matty Love Triangle - Exclusive

As if to say, “this really is what I want,” Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards) choose new boyfriend Jake Rosati (Brett Davern) over first love Matty McKibben (Beau Mirchoff) for the second time on Awkward’s Season 2 premiere. It would of course be the most logical decision, seeing as the adorable Jake is in their relationship wholeheartedly, while Matty is only now realizing the mistakes he’s made.

Well, one of those mistakes is about to rear its ugly head on tonight’s episode of the MTV drama we can’t help but be addicted to. At a recent set visit, Wetpaint Entertainment got a chance to chat to Brett Davern about bumps in the road and what goes on in Jake’s life when he’s not being Jenna’s BF.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Your character seems to be in a happy place, but Jenna may not be entirely certain where she ends up. Where do we go from here?
Brett Davern: Jake and Jenna are very much together. They're happy. Jake, he's good at being a boyfriend. He knows how to do that. He's probably been a boyfriend since the fifth grade. So I think he's excited to explore a new relationship and what Jenna's about. And it's obviously what he's been wanting for the whole year leading up to that point. Obviously, Jenna's probably going through some hard times finding the letter, but I think Jake's the perfect guy to be with her through that time and be her guy to lean on. But as the season goes on, there's ups and downs. There's bumps in the road, like any good relationship. It's not Jenna Hamilton, without some awkward moments, so there will definitely be those.

What about Matty, speaking of bumps in the road?
Well, you know, he could be a big bump in the road. But Jake knows nothing about them.
As far as he's concerned, Jenna likes him, and he likes Jenna. And off they go. He knows that Matty had this camp girl but obviously he doesn't know that it's Jenna. As this season moves along, I think all those questions will be answered. Jake and Matty's friendship might be tested in some ways, but not necessarily in a negative way. Friendships need to grow. I think it's all dealt with in a very real way though, and in a way that if the audience had any questions, those will all be answered.

You say they’re happy, and so often on television, “happy” means that they're putting two people together to tear them apart?
I think that's the beauty of our show that it kind of goes in unexpected places. It doesn't really stick with the mold of like a traditional TV. [Creator] Lauren Iungerich is just a genius at finding ways of just toying with the audience a little bit. You think it's going to go one way, and it's going to go another. I'm just really excited for people to see it on screen because I'm sick of talking in code. Like I said, any of those questions that they had lingering, those will all be answered.

Quickly?
As the season goes along, but that's only going to lead to more questions, and isn't that what we want? It's funny because everyone always wants this resolution, but then why would you watch? You know what I mean? You've got to keep watching. We’ve got to keep the drama going in all aspects. Not just with Jake and Jenna, but with Jenna and her mom and her whole family in general. There's a lot of new characters this season that I think people are going to start to be behind – and possibly new love interests for different characters. There's a lot of fun stuff.

I am speaking in code, but it will all be revealed, I promise.

Will we go more into his life? What he's thinking?
I think some of those things will start to be seen kind of underneath the surface. All of season one, Jake's just the good guy. Nice guys finish last. And I think season two, he's definitely still Jake, but there will be some different layers to him. People will see some different emotions. I'm excited about that. He never was one-dimensional, but I just like that he's going to be able to experience a whole range of emotions. And I think, he, as a character, is going to be definitely flushed out more in season two. People will get to know the real Jake.

Does he sense that Jenna is maybe not all in?
I think that as far as Jake is concerned, they're together, and they're happy. I think, maybe, he sees more of a change in Matty. Like, ‘Wait, why is my buddy acting different?’ That's where the light bulb starts to go off a little bit more. And then of course, we'll see how all that gets dealt with.
