Baby Daddy Star Jean-Luc Bilodeau on the Joys of Fake Fatherhood - Exclusive

Remember Three Men and a Baby? Well, ABC Family is taking a page out of that hilarious book and exploring what it would be like if three 20somethings found a baby on their doorstep.

Ben (Jean-Luc Bilodeau) becomes a surprise dad when his ex-girlfriend leaves him with a child he didn’t know he had. He turns to his brother (Derek Theler) and two friends (Dancing With the Stars’ Chelsea Kane and Tahj Mowry) for support as he makes a major choice — to be a parent or not to be a parent. While the name of the show is a dead giveaway for his ultimate decision, the new sitcom is full of surprises.

Wetpaint Entertainment recently got a chance to chat with Jean-Luc Bilodeau about the new sitcom, as well as his cast’s surprising and newfound adoration for newborns.

Wetpaint Entertainment: So how's having a kid?  

Jean-Luc: It's exciting. It's a new learning experience for me. I've never really been around babies. I don't have any younger cousins or younger nephews or anything. My first day at work was pretty nerve-wracking. It was my first time ever cuddling a baby and making her smile. So I actually transformed into a totally different person. It's fun!  

I heard they can’t keep the three of you guys away from this child. What happened?  

 As soon as she walks on set, we just turn into these other people, and we're doing all these stupid things, jumping around, making funny noises, doing funny faces. That's pretty much all we do on set all day. So, yeah, it's weird. I mean, Tahj, he's been around kids. He's pretty good at it already. And me and Derek, we're pretty much new to this whole baby thing. So, yeah, we transform into like animals when we're around the baby.

Tell us about your character.  

Ben was a really easygoing, nice, regular guy living in New York. A bartender. Had lots of girlfriends, going out, living the life. And then as soon as baby Emma shows up, his world is completely turned around, and he's got to play Dad. He's got all these new responsibilities that he never had before. And with the help of his roommates and his mom and close friend, they all kind of help him through it.  

At the end of the pilot, he seems pretty at peace with his decision, but I assume if you're going to have a show, that's all going to be flipped on its head?  

Yeah. At first, it was more of like when he first decided to keep the baby and play Dad, he's excited. He's nervous, but he doesn't really know what's in store for him. And as the show progresses, it's like, this is a really big responsibility. It's a breathing baby. You know what I mean? So he takes some learning, for sure, but I think he's doing a pretty good job. 

What have you learned in real life about kids and the not so fun and giggly and happy parts?  

Well, the nice thing about my job is that I get to pass the baby off whenever she's not having a good time. I mean, it's not like being a real dad where you actually have to calm the baby down. 

What does she do that's not so pleasant?  

Sometimes she throws up on you. It's not that bad. I mean, it's only a little bit, but it goes on your hand or something. But, honestly, I mean, these babies are incredible. They're so relaxed and easygoing. And they're being passed around the entire set, and they're fine. And they work in front of an audience. So we really have it pretty easy on set, for sure. 

There’s already a love triangle in the first episode. What can you tease about it?  

Riley (Chelsea Kane) is me and my brother’s childhood friend. She comes back into our lives, and she's in love with me. I have no idea. Although my brother is in love with her, and she has no idea that he likes her. So it's like this weird thing, and I'm clueless to all of it. I'm clueless that she likes me, and I'm clueless that my brother is in love with her. So I'm just focused on my baby and my job, and all the girls that I'm hanging out with. 

Oh, really? There are girls?  

Yeah. In almost every episode. He's not trying to date. I think it's more like a one-time thing. You know what I mean? It's really funny how it all works out, but he always seems to like get himself into a situation, like just a really silly situation with a girl. 

Isn't the baby the best form of birth control in the world?  

Oh, I mean, something always happens, and it draws me away from the girl that I'm trying to see. And it always ends up me going back home to my baby, and it always ends up me and my daughter. So no matter who I'm dating, somehow Emma is involved in the relationship.
