Breaking Down the Game of Thrones Season 2, Episode 9 Previews: What Happens In "Blackwater"?
The Game of Thrones cast and crew aren't exactly forthcoming with the spoilers, so even the most devoted book fans are left wondering what precisely will happen on each new episode of the hit series.
Fortunately, we do have the previews about the episode to help us out. We've closely examined the previews for Season 2, Episode 9: "Blackwater" (which you can watch here, here, and here). This is what we can glean about what goes down when battle breaks out.
Battle does, in fact, break out: That's the main thing. Stannis and his fleet arrive at King's Landing, and this episode will focus on the fight for the city. None of the previews show any characters not involved with the fight, and we wouldn't be surprised if we spend the entire episode King's Landing (and the sea near it).
The stakes are high: "If the city falls, Stannis will burn every Lannister he can find," Tyrion reminds us in this preview. And in the main preview, Cersei, sitting at a table with Sansa and what looks like other people not fit for fighting, says, "Stannis may take the throne, but he will not take us alive." Is she suggesting what we think she's suggesting?
Stannis has a huge army: "They're too many!" Joffrey exclaims, and there's a clip of him looking horrified. It sounds like Stannis has mustered his forces well.
Tyrion in charge: All the the preview feature Tyrion, Tyrion, and more Tyrion. Tyrion walking amongst the men, Tyrion making an inspiring speech — "Those are brave men knocking at our door. Let's go kill them!" —Tyrion surrounded by cheering soldiers and fire. We expect this episode to be overflowing with our favorite snarky Hand, and we can't wait.
The bells: We can already tell this episode will be big on atmosphere. The main preview opens with bells solemnly ringing. "I've always hated the bells," Varys says. "They ring for horror."
Bronn is awesome: Bronn + a flaming arrow = excellent. We can't wait to see Tyrion's best bro in his element once again.
Fire: "Reign fire on them," Tyrion says at the end of this teaser, and the main promo shows a clip of flaming arrows flying through the sky, as well as a person on fire. Let us not forget that Tyrion has a store of the dangerous, magical wildfire (which we learned about in Season 2, Episode 5: "The Ghost of Harrenhal"), though it remains to be seen if he will risk using it. Remember, it could easily backfire and burn the city.
