Why do exes have to speak up and make things so complicated?

Avril Lavigne, 27, and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, 37, caught everyone off-guard when they announced their engagement on August 22. Seriously, we were still stuck on Avril’s on-again, off-again relationship with Brody Jenner, which ended only seven months ago.

According to Chad, he and Avril had an instant connection. “I knew I was falling for her,” the rocker tells Hello! Canada (via Us Weekly). “It was incredibly powerful and something I'll never forget.”

The twosome is totally a match made in Canadian music heaven, but their whirlwind romance may not be such a fairy tale after all.

RadarOnline is now reporting that Chad split with ex-girlfriend Kristen DeWitt, a 27-year-old blonde from Ohio, this past April — two months after Chad and Avril apparently began dating. (Stories have them first hooking up in February, when they teamed up to work on Avril’s upcoming fifth album, but perhaps that’s not accurate?)

"His engagement to Avril completely caught Kristen off guard and the timelines don't match up. Chad had to have been seeing Avril behind Kristen's back,” a source explains to the site.

Math aside, we’ll hope story isn’t true and continue to be happy for Avril as she heads into marriage number two.
