While Katie Holmes seems to have been subtly preparing for her divorce for weeks, the actress’s soon-to-be ex-husband, Tom Cruise, was apparently a bit more caught off guard.

According to People, the actor was completely shocked to hear that Katie had both filed for divorce in New York and asked for sole custody of their 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

A “deeply saddened” Tom, who is currently in Iceland filming his new movie, was even proclaiming his love for his wife a few days before the break-up, telling People that his perfect day is “the time with Kate.”

“He had no idea this was coming,” a source said of the split. “He’s totally devastated and heartbroken.”

So can the actor jump back on Oprah’s couch, declare his love, and win his wife back? Not likely, sources say. 

“She’s a strong person and makes up her own mind,” another insider said of Katie’s firm decision to divorce. “She’s unwavering.”
