Hunger Games to Get Spoofed in The Starving Games
In today’s “it was inevitable” news, The Hunger Games will be spoofed in a full-length feature film, according to Variety. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer — two guys with a lot of experience in the send-up genre — will write and direct The Starving Games.
Between writing and directing Scary Movie, Vampires Suck, and Date Movie, Friedberg and Seltzer have made a living mocking blockbuster movies. Though their flicks get abysmal ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, they pull in enough cash to be more than profitable, so if it ain’t broke, why not spoof it?
The problem with their movies is that they take two minutes of material and stretch it into a full-length feature. Harvard Lampoon’s The Hunger Pains already covered this territory in its trailer — and they had Lily Tomlin. In addition to Peeta bread and Katnip jokes, expect references to Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, and The Avengers as the guys try to flesh out the material into a full movie.
So, yeah, we’ll probably skip what’s sure to be 90 minutes of archery innuendos, random cameos, and low-budget special effects.
