The 2012 MTV Movie Awards was very kind about spreading the love — giving major awards to The Hunger Games, but also allowing Harry Potter to get Best Hero and Best Cast and giving Twilight Best Kiss (again) and the most coveted award of the night, Movie of the Year. Check out the full list of winners here and read on for some other highlights from the two-hour show.
1. Russell Brand’s opening monologue
Do you think he was inspired by Ricky Gervais’ controversial Golden Globes gig (1.0, not the more tame 2.0)? In his opening monologue Russell offered Charlie Sheen a bottle of Hennessy and a gram of coke, poked fun at how he met ex-wife Katy Perry the last time he was at the MTV Movie Awards, joked about Justin Bieber getting gang-banged in prison, talked about giving John Travolta a massage and admired both Michael Fassbender’s and Alec Baldwin’s penises Read more about Russell’s monologue and vote on whether you loved or loathed it.
2. Kristen Stewart has to kiss herself
Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson won Best Kiss for the fourth year in a row, but Kristen had to accept the award on her own. However, she wasn’t just going to stand there twirling her hair and biting her lip. She tried to get her Snow White and the Huntsman co-stars to kiss her and, failing that, her other Twilight co-star, Taylor Lautner. Here’s what she said. Funny stuff, KStew.
3. Johnny Depp performs with the Black Keys
Because he wasn't hot enough as an actor, Johnny had to play rock star too. Joe Perry and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith presented MTV's Generation Award to Johnny. After they showed a bunch of clips of his films, Johnny showed up on stage to play guitar with The Black Keys. Still wearing his guitar, Johnny accepted the award and said Steven spit out one of his teeth (he actually seemed to spit something out on stage... eww...). "I'll put it back in later," Johnny continued. "I gotta thank MTV for this. This is quite an amazing honor, truly. It's like the Get Out of the Business Award, basically. You've done too much. And clearly based on the clips, there's obviously something wrong with me. I just thank you very much. And it's an honor to be presented by these two legends — Steven and Joe — and these up-and-coming legends, The Black Keys."
4. Joel McHale is the world’s worst archery expert
In a pretty cute spoof video, director J.J. Abrams noted that the explosion of films and TV shows like Hunger Games and Game of Thrones have shown a need for real archery training on sets. Cue Joel McHale as archery expert “Lester Boonshaft.” Jennifer Lawrence said she had to work with Lester on Hunger Games. “Did I find it odd that an archery teacher didn’t know how to hold a bow and arrow? Yeah.” J.J. joked that he cut out a whole archery subplot of the new Star Trek movie, just so he didn’t have to work with Lester — “He’s a horrible man.” Jennifer continued, “I made the mistake of giving Lester my phone number. At first he would just call and give me tips about archery. Now it’s just this.” She held up her phone with a blurred photo. “I don’t even know what part of the body that is.” Cut to Joel/Lester. “That’s my dick.”
5. Charlize Theron kicks Michael Fassbender’s butt
Poor Fassy got abused all night — first Russell Brand went on about his nether regions and then he got his butt kicked by his Prometheus co-star. Charlize and Michael Fassbender presented the award for Best Fight to The Hunger Games, but beforehand Michael joked that he would handle the reading of the nominees because he’s Irish. “You know, fighting Irish and all that.” Charlize said “Right” and shrugged. “And considering you’re a girl and all that...” Michael said, then started to say, “and the nominees are...” Charlize then faux smacked him on the back and kneed him in the chin. She finished him off with a kick of her heels and the crowd cheered. We still love you, Fassy!
6. Elizabeth Banks has sexy “gimme the popcorn” moment with Magic Mike stars
Magic Mike stars Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum were already on stage ready to present the Best Transformation award when Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" started playing and True Blood's Joe Manganiello came out in his shirtless fireman costume as "Big Dick Richie" from Magic Mike. Whew! The Transformation award went to Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks and she immediately thanked MTV for that moment right there with the three hot guys. Joe put the popcorn award down below and Elizabeth backed into him, saying "Gimme the popcorn! Gimme the popcorn!" Dang, girl! At least she thanked her husband after that ... right before Joe picked her up and carried her off stage.
7. Emma Stone gets roasted for Trailblazer Award
Emma won the first ever Trailblazer Award, but not before putting up with some good-natured ribbing from co-stars in a video package. Anna Faris started to talk about Sharon Stone as one of the greatest actresses alive today. When told this was for Emma Stone, her co-star in The House Bunny, she said "Yeah, but I *like* Sharon Stone." She later added "Emma Stone is why I hate women." Jim Carrey, infamous for his video crush on Emma, wore a black shirt with Emma's face crossed out. "I saw her kick a blind kid once," he said. He also held up a doll with cutouts of their photos pasted on its face. "This is what our baby would've looked like." Jason Sudeikis said, "She's the only person I've met, only Caucasian person, that's racist toward other Caucasians. Like, overtly." Mila Kunis said she was hospitalized several times for Emma stone-related injuries. Jim said she probably peaked back when she was in The Parent Trap (which was actually Lindsay Lohan). Then the gorgeous Emma gave a sweet, gracious speech. Yeah, someone that perfect probably does deserve a few jabs.
8. Christian Bale gets choked up about Heath Ledger
Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christian Bale showed a recap of the Batman movies as a preview for the upcoming film The Dark Knight Rises. After the clips were shown, a visibly moved Christian went up to the mic. “Great to remember Heath in that moment,” he said of Heath Ledger, who died before the film came out. “Wonderful to see Heath Ledger there.” His voice sounded shaky and tearful as he introduced never-before-seen footage of the new film — and the film’s director/god, Christopher Nolan.
