If you want proof that gingers have souls, just look to Anne of Green Gables. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the granddaughter of the books’ author, Kate Macdonald Butler, will help adapt 13 episodes of a new series starring the feisty redhead.

Lucy Maud Montgomery’s beloved literary creation has been adapted for both film and TV numerous times, though perhaps most famously with Megan Follows as Anne Shirley and Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla Cuthbert. (Richard Farnsworth played Matthew, but we still can’t think about him without tearing up, so you’ll have to excuse us.)

Canada.com reports that the new show will still take place on Prince Edward Island in the 1870s, but the themes will be updated for a more contemporary feel. “If you go back to Chapter 5 in Anne of Green Gables, she talks about the two foster homes that she lived in and the orphanage before she came to Green Gables,” Butler tells the site. “Some of it's very dark.” Production will begin in summer 2013, so there’s plenty of time to find the perfect Anne, her bosom friend Diana Barry, and, of course, Gilbert Blythe.

We don’t know about you, but we’re going to toast this news with some raspberry cordial.
