Whitney Houston performs onstage at the 2011 Pre-GRAMMY Gala and Salute to Industry Icons Honoring David Geffen at Beverly Hilton on February 12, 2011 in Beverly Hills, California.
Whitney Houston was found dead in the bathtub in her room at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, February 11 — just hours before she was slated to attend Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy Awards bash. She was only 48. Today brings new details related to her funeral and the investigation into the cause of her untimely passing.
According to Us Weekly, the singer’s funeral will take place at noon on Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. Her body arrived in New Jersey on Monday via private plane, and It was then taken to Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, the same place where her father, John, was laid to rest in 2003.
The Houston family released a statement in the wake of the tragedy: "This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends."
A “family source” for TMZ believes a fatal mix of Xanax and alcohol are to blame for the singer’s death, but the official investigation hasn’t yet determined the cause. According to a new report from the Los Angeles Times, examiners are currently taking stock of the prescription medicines found in Whitney’s room.
Ed Winter, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner's office, said, "No matter what medication they may be taking, until we do a toxicology test and see the levels, we are not going to speculate.”
But that doesn’t change the fact that Whitney had a long and very public struggle with alcohol and drug abuse, spending time in rehab as recently as last May.
Whitney is survived by her daughter Bobbi Kristina, 18, who suffered a nervous breakdown after learning of her mother’s death, and her mother, Cissy.
RIP, Whitney. We will always love you.
