Oz the Great and Powerful Is the Weekend's Number-One Movie
Great, powerful, and just about any other mighty superlatives you can toss at Oz the Great and Powerful will do, thank you! The Disney film directed by Sami Raimi (the mastermind behind the original Spiderman trilogy) has kicked off its weekend debut with box-office earnings of a cool $80.3 million, according to CBS Local. And the weekend is not even halfway through!
The 3D extravaganza stars James Franco as the mysterious Oz himself, as well as Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams as the trio of witches whom Oz meets in the magical realm of his namesake.
Oz the Great and Powerful cost around $200 million to make; if it continues at this rate, it will break even and rev to huge profit in no time. The movie premiered a week after Jack the Giant Slayer, another 3D sensation that stars Nicholas Hoult and Eleanor Tomlinson. Unfortunately, the latter isn’t exactly living up to its title, and reportedly earned $28 million its opening weekend — a dud amount considering the money that went into the project.
It’s pretty cool to think that the original The Wizard of Oz, which came out back in 1939, is still generating such imaginative ideas. Jack and the Beanstalk, the fairy tale on which Jack the Giant Slayer is based, has been around for centuries!
