full size Padma Lakshmi's Emmy Ad

Sorry guys, but we're going to have to get on our feminist high horse for a second, here.

As you may or may not know, every year around this time TV networks put out ads to woo Emmy votes for their best shows and actors. These ads are normally visually bold and focus on conveying why the show or person is awesome and talented, often with the help of positive quotes from reviews.

Unless, apparently, you're Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi, in which case your ad this year is you holding a spoon and licking chocolate off yourself, with the tagline "who wants to lick the spoon?" Because the most important quality for being an Outstanding Host in a Reality or Reality Competition Program is how sexy you are, right?

As Eater points out, this ad actually used a 5-year-old photo from GQ. It's not only not focusing on Padma's talents as a host, it's not even focusing on Padma's work from this year at all. What's the message here? Padma deserves a nomination because she posed for a men's magazine that one time?

For comparison's sake, here's the ad for Survivor's Jeff Probst and The Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan. Notice how they are both posed to look serious and professional, and there's actually some hint of what their respective shows are about.

There's no denying that Padma is absolutely gorgeous. But in a competition about talent, wouldn't it be nice if the Top Chef Powers That Be could focus on her skills as host, not her ability to lick things?
