UPDATE: Looks like Sacha Baron Cohen may be welcome at the Oscars after all. The Academy told The Hollywood Reporter that the actor hasn't been banned, and is welcome to attend as long as he doesn't pull any Dictator-like shenanigans.
Yesterday, we reported that Hugo actor Sacha Baron Cohen was not welcome at the Oscars. According to Deadline, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences heard rumors that Cohen was planning on walking the Oscars red carpet this Sunday as Admiral General Aladeen, his Qadaffi-esque parody of a Middle Eastern leader from his upcoming summer flick The Dictator, the Academy snatched back his tickets.
“Unless they’re assured that nothing entertaining is going to happen on the Red Carpet, the Academy is not admitting Sacha Baron Cohen to the show,” spilled a source.
Sacha, who’s famous for his totally inappropriate alter egos Ali G, Borat, and Bruno, supposedly wanted to unveil his latest creation at the 84th Academy Awards as a publicity stunt. It wouldn’t be a stretch for him — he crashed Milan Fashion Week as Bruno back in 2008 — but it certainly would be out of character for the uber-formal, tradition-bound Oscars.
But now the Academy has lightened up and said that Sacha can attend, as long as he behaves. It's a good thing. After all, it’s not like Sacha has actually committed any crimes against humanity... unless The Dictator is a stinker like Bruno and Ali G Indahouse.
And judging by the preview, it could be hilarious, it could be cringe inducing — the jury’s out until it hits theaters May 11.
