Seventeen Magazine to Feature Non-Airbrushed Models
Apparently, the voices of thousands of young women can make a difference.
Seventeen editor-in-chief Ann Shoket announced a new promise in the August 2012 issue: The girl’s mag will “never change girls’ body or face shapes” when editing images for the publication.
A public anti-airbrush petition started by 14-year-old Julia Bluhm on Change.org is largely to thank for Seventeen’s change of heart. Her “Seventeen Magazine: Give Girls Images of Real Girls” petition racked up 84,000 signatures before it was hand-delivered by Julia and a group of young girls to the mag’s office in New York City.
Julia told ABC News, “I hoped that Seventeen would do this, but I guess I didn’t think it would actually happen.” She added, “If we can be heard by one magazine, we can do it with another. We are sparking a change!”
A similar petition has already been started for Teen Vogue.
We have to say, it’s a long shot that certainly paid off, especially for future young women!
