Shia LeBeouf Dropped Acid For a Film — Is There Anything He Won't Do?

Someone get Shia LeBeouf a verbal filter — stat!

First the Transformers star disses once-mentor Steven Spielberg.  Then he says studio execs effectively stick a finger up actors' you-know-whats.  Then he says he’s fine with having unsimulated (read: real) on-screen sex for his part in Lars von Trier’s upcoming Nymphomaniac.  

Now the 26-year-old says that he dropped acid during the filming of The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman.

"There's a way to do an acid trip like Harold & Kumar,” he tells USA Today, “and there's a way to be on acid. What I know of acting, Sean Penn actually strapped up to that [electric] chair in Dead Man Walking. These are the guys that I look up to."

Necessary Death is a story about an average joe who falls for a woman who has been “claimed” by a vicious crime boss, putting his life in danger as well as that of the woman.  The film’s co-stars include Rupert Grint, Evan Rachel Wood, and Aubrey Plaza.

But the acid trip wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, reveals Shia. "Sometimes, it does get real... too real for a [director] who's trying to keep a diplomatic set."

If Shia’s so devoted to his art, we sure hope his next role involves cross-stitching or saving kittens or something else non-destructive.  And if not, maybe he’ll keep a lid on his actorly research.
