The American Horror Story Season 2 Subtitle Is Absolutely Insane

Now that American Horror Story is officially a miniseries — “each year is a closed-ended story,” describes creator Ryan Murphy — it’s fitting that the second installment is going by a unique subtitle.

In a statement released today (via The Hollywood Reporter), Ryan reveals that the sophomore season will be called American Horror Story: Asylum.

Ryan details the careful reasoning behind the word: "We picked Asylum because it not only describes the setting — an insane asylum run by Jessica Lange's character which was formerly a tuberculosis ward — but also signifies a place of haven for the unloved and the unwanted,” he says. “This year's theme is about sanity and tackling real-life horrors.”

The Season 2 drama is set to unfold in a 1960s-era asylum for the criminally insane, and the returning actors — Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Lily Rabe — will play completely different characters than they did in Season 1, which took place in the infamous Murder House. Rounding out the cast are new additions Chloe Sevigny, Lizzie Brocheré, Joseph Fiennes, James Cromwell, Britne Oldford, Mark Consuelos, Clea Duvall, Jenna Dewan, Adam Levine, Chris Zylka, and Franka Potente.

American Horror Story is up for 17 Emmy Awards in the miniseries categories this year, which surprised those who thought the FX drama was your typical extended-narrative TV show. Ryan explains, "When we launched the show last year, we kept quiet about the closed-ended nature of the show because we didn’t want to tip off the audience that the characters were not going to survive.”

Even if Season 2, slated to premiere in October, doesn’t see a similar off-the-charts death toll, it’s sure to be crazy.
