There's Nothing Awkward About Beau Mirchoff
If you think MTV’s programming is all about fist-pumping and doing shots in a hot tub, think again.
The network that used to showcase music now features a schedule packed with original programming, and one of the newest hits is Awkward., a drama about teens that is anything but a "teen drama." If you ever watched Skins (the U.S. version, RIP), we don’t need to tell you that MTV thinks very differently when it comes to high school kids, and while that show was too scandalous to survive, we think Awkward. is here to stay.
Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the show’s leading man, Beau Mirchoff, to get ourselves acquainted with his sexy pseudonym, Matty McKibben. For those who aren’t familiar with Awkward., which is well into its first season, it focuses on 15-year-old Jenna Hamilton and "follows her life, conflict and chaos," explained Beau, who plays a popular jock and the object of Jenna's desire.
"Jenna lost her virginity to Matty in a broom closet but he doesn’t know if he wants to take the relationship to the next level, or let anyone at school know," said the 22-year-old actor, who described the bizarre location of her deflowering. "They were both camp counselors at summer camp so there was nowhere else to go!"
While Jenna is clearly head over heels for Matty (sometimes literally thanks to her clumsy ways), Matty is keeping her at arm's length.
"Matty is learning about himself and a lot about relationships. He really cares about Jenna, but he doesn’t really know how to show feelings," revealed Beau. "The upcoming episodes are about him trying to find a way to make the relationship work. It’s the first big relationship for Mattie, he’s never had a girlfriend so it’s undiscovered territory."
The Canadian hottie, who hails from Vancouver, said the rocky relationship between the jock and the invisible girl reminds him a lot of his high school years.
"I had a girl I was seeing in high school who was kind of weird and had a stigma to her, and that was similar. I liked her but didn’t want to commit," he confessed.
It didn’t work out for her, but we hope there’s a happier ending for Jenna and Matty!
