Some people make New Year’s resolutions on January 1, others wait a few weeks. Disney princess Demi Lovato resolved to quit Twitter in an effort to keep herself in check: “Twitter break. It's for the best actually. Who allows me to have this thing anyways?!!! I just get myself in trouble! Haha. Anyway... BYE!” tweeted the “Skyscraper” singer on January 21. While some are worried about her mental health — Lovato deleted her account in 2010 before entering rehab for depression, cutting, and an eating disorder — it’s possible this Twitter quit came about when a sexy photo of the singer surfaced the same day.

Lovato’s tweets aren’t exactly controversial: “Hahahahahahaa you guys are amazing...” and “I miss my fans... I wish I was having one giant meet and greet today so I could hug each and every one of you,” are her standard fare, though she did raise eyebrows in early January when she tweeted, "Sometimes it seems like God just keeps throwing crap my way and I get SO angry with him.” Let’s hope all is well with Demi, and she’ll one day return to Twitter à la Miley Cyrus, who rapped her reasons for deleting her account in 2009. (A few of Miley’s lyrics? “No more emo quotes and fake feuds with Demi.” Prophetic.)

Demi’s second attempt at going tweet silent again places her in the ranks of the Twitter quitters: celebs who said goodbye to daily updates to millions of fans.

Ashton Kutcher tweeted about Penn State firing Joe Paterno without knowing all the facts, but upon learning about the controversy surrounding the coach, Kutcher banned himself from Twitter for roughly a day before turning his feed over to a management team.

In late 2011, after getting kicked off an American Airlines flight for refusing to stop playing Words With Friends, Alec Baldwin unleashed several Twitter attacks against the airlines... and then quit altogether. Herevived his account in 2012.

John Mayer was a self-confessed “tweetaholic” until he pulled the plug in 2010.

After a bitter breakup and tweet rant against former fiancé Luke Worral, Kelly Osbourne decided to heal offline.

Chris Brown has quit Twitter twice, once in 2009 and again in November 2011 after ranting that people kept tweeting him about Rihanna. He reactivated a few days later.

In September 2010, the world went dark when Amanda Bynes quit Twitter. You could no longer read her compelling insights, such as “I’m on my couch and in that movie at the same time. whoa.” It was fresh off her decision to retire from acting, and the universe seemed bleak indeed. Luckily, she unretired from both!

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Camille Grammer said she had to quit Twitter in July 2011 because of all the threats she received. She’s back and better than ever now.
