Do I Get Extra Credit For This? Student-Teacher Relationships
The youngest teacher in our high school had a good 15 years on us and quoted sci-fi movies in between discussions of protozoa. Not sexy. But on TV, there are always hip, hot teachers who sit cross-legged on their desk, invite students to pizza parties at their place, and then make out with them.
Many of these relationships are totally age-inappropriate — Pretty Little Liars’ Aria (Lucy Hale) is dating her admittedly hot ex-teacher Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding) (a turn of events her parents are none too pleased about), and Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson) went all the way with his English teacher Tamara Jacobs (Leann Hunley) on Dawson’s Creek.
Sometimes they have serious consequences. Even though they never did the deed, Serena van der Woodsen’s boarding school teacher on Gossip Girl, Ben (David Call), landed in jail. (This doesn’t stop Serena from falling for her college professor later on. Oh, S — will you never learn?) Also on Gossip Girl, Dan (Penn Badgley) gets hot-’n’-heavy with his former English teacher, Ms. Carr, after Blair (Leighton Meester) gets Ms. Carr fired by spreading a rumor about Dan and Ms. Carr’s then-nonexistent relationship.
In an episode of Veronica Mars, the teenage sleuth (Kristen Bell) discovers that her favorite teach (Adam Scott) impregnated one of her classmates — a crime that does not go unpunished. Speaking of VM, Jason Dohring’s character, Mr. Carpenter, gets embroiled in some nasty student-teacher allegations on Ringer. And while we’re not blaming Paris (Liza Wiel), her septuagenarian Yale professor lover (Michael York) does die while dating her on Gilmore Girls.
The lesson? Don’t play teacher’s pet. Especially now that everyone has a camera on their cell phone.
