Will Smith Then and Now
Then: A rapper with some impressive hits (“Summertime” is still our summertime jam), Will Smith was part of the duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. In 1990, a nearly bankrupt Smith became the star of the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, where he chased fly honies, annoyed his Uncle Phil, and made short jokes about his cousin Carlton for six glorious seasons.
In the early ‘90s, while the show was still going, Will got married (to Sheree Zampino), welcomed a son (Trey), and got divorced — all in the span of a few short years.
Now: Following the show’s end in 1996 (Mama, no!), Will booked big-budget flick after big-budget flick. Independence Day (which co-starred his Fresh Prince castmate Ross Bagley, a.k.a. Nicky), Men in Black, and Enemy of the State made him an action star — though the best thing we can say about Wild Wild West is that it spawned Cartman’s rendition of the song on South Park.
He married Jada Pinkett Smith in 1997, and the couple has two children, daughter Willow (who whips — or whipped — her hair back and forth) and son Jaden (who is a Karate Kid). Will took some time off between 2008’s Hancock and 2012’s Men in Black III. While he got jiggy with his music career for a while, he hasn’t released an album since 2005. Perhaps he was working on this “Summertime” remix all this time?
