Part 1 of Chris Brown’s relationship with Rihanna didn’t end on a high note.

Chris allegedly got brutally physical with Rihanna before the Grammy Awards on February 8, 2009, leading to the cancellation of their scheduled performances that night. The “Run It!” singer was arrested, and the altercation received a firestorm of press — far more than a typical domestic violence case. In this instance, the identity of the victim was divulged... and a highly disturbing photo was leaked.

Rihanna and Chris apparently attempted a reconciliation later that month, but to no avail. Charged with assault and making criminal threats, Chris ultimately received five years probation, a restraining order, and a permanent stain on his reputation.

On the topic of their violent breakup, Rihanna later told Elle, “It gave me guns. I was like, well, f**k. They know more about me than I want them to know. It’s embarrassing. But that was my opening. That was my liberation, my moment of bring it. […] Now you know that, so you can say what you want about it. I don’t have anything to hide.”
