Have you ever thought to yourself, "My favorite TV shows would be so much better if I had to watch them piecemeal across different platforms, none of which included TV"?
Of course you haven't, but that's exactly what the folks at Summer Break are counting on.
The new reality show, which follows nine attractive L.A.-area teens doing attractive teen stuff over the summer between high school and college, will only be documented on social media sites, including Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Vine, and YouTube, according to The Wall Street Journal.
60-second clips of the show will be posted each day on YouTube, with 3-5 minute weekly wrap-ups airing at the end of each week. Professional cameras will follow the cast around 20 hours each day, while the rest of the content will be posted by cast members on their personal social media accounts and the @SummerBreak Twitter.
"This is on a level so much further than anything anybody has ever done—it is real life in real time on multiple platforms," explained Peter Chernin, whose company, Chernin Group, is distributing the series. "I love the riskiness of it."
Summer Break, which promises to be less scripted than the average reality show, does have a leg-up when it comes to the show's finances, which, at $5 million, are significantly lower than the average reality show, albeit more expensive than one might imagine for a show with no actual TV involved.
So, if you loved The Hills, but hated the convenience of getting the story all in one place, Summer Break may just be the show for you.
The question remains: will you actually watch?
