Andrew Garfield is a huge Spider-Man buff — and an intellectually-minded fellow — so it's apt that he played Peter Parker a.k.a. Spidey in last year's The Amazing Spider-Man and is reprising the role in next year's sequel. Plus, he has unique ideas for the character's trajectory — like a little same-sex attraction!
As Entertainment Weekly reports, Andrew Garfield conferred with producer Matt Tolmach about the prospect in regards to Mary Jane, one of Peter's leading ladies in the comic-book series.
"I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ," he tells the magazine. "And I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! … So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?"
Andrew even has a potential same-sex scene partner: "I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better — we’d have interracial bisexuality"
As EW also touts, the blockbusters' director Marc Webb is fully aware of Andrew's ideas. "Michael B. Jordan, I know" Marc says.
We think it's a kinda genius idea — and not just because we're incredibly impressed with (and sorta crushing on) Michael from his roles in Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, and the upcoming big-screen drama Fruitvale Station.
(Of course, we do love Andrew's on- and off-screen lover, Emma Stone!)
We're all for inclusiveness and for better representation of LGBT folk on our screens, so we applaud Andrew on his open-mindedness. Our GLAAD Award sense is tingling!
