Joe Conley, a veteran TV and film actor, has passed away at the age of 85.

His wife, Louise, informed the Los Angeles Times that Joe died on Sunday, July 7, at a care facility in Newbury Park, Calif., and that Joe had dementia.

Joe is best known for his role in The Waltons, a family drama about a rural Virginia community subsiding during World War II and the Great Depression. Joe played the supporting role of storekeeper Ike Godsey for the series' entire nine-season run between 1971 and 1981 and in the six subsequent TV movies.

Joe's four-decade TV career boasted roles in other notable shows like Lassie, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Dragnet, Gunsmoke, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Brady Bunch, and Knight Rider. On the big screen, Joe had a small role in the 2000 Tom Hanks survival tale Cast Away.
