UPDATE 9/22/13: At a pre-Emmys party on September 20, Laura told Us Weekly she will return for Orange Is the New Black Season 2. "It's an amazing show, and my character is a total badass. I don't want to stop playing her because she is amazing, but I'm definitely coming back for season two, and it's going to be awesome."
UPDATE 8/16/13: Prior to the BuzzFeed report saying that Laura Prepon (Alex) will not be returning to Orange is the New Black when Netflix's second season comes out, the actress spoke to Vulture about the role. When asked about rumors she might not be returning, she refuted, saying she'd be back: 'Yeah, of course. It's just scheduling. It's all scheduling, girl."
Orange is the New Black may be a breakout hit, but it looks like one of the show's stars may already be looking to break out of their contract with the show.
BuzzFeed reported on Wednesday evening that Laura Prepon, who stars as protagonist Piper's drug smuggling love interest, Alex, will not be returning full time for the second season of the Netflix original series.
According to the site, Laura will star in a few of the episodes in the second season to wrap up her storyline, with the possibility of a return at some point further down the line.
While AfterEllen has suggested that Laura, a devout Scientologist, has chosen to leave the show because her religion frowns upon homosexuality, these reports remain unconfirmed.
As of Thursday morning, Netflix has given a statement to E! regarding the star's alleged departure from the show.
"It's not accurate," said a representative for the streaming service. "Our season is still developing and nothing is confirmed."
OK, so that doesn’t really tell us that Laura will be back, but it rules out the possibility that she's completely ruled out as a full-time character in season two.
Do you think the show would work without the Alex-Piper storyline?
