UPDATE: It's confirmed! Dakota will play Ana. Author E.L. James tweeted the news on September 2. Are you excited? Disappointed? Keeping an open mind?
As if there haven’t been enough rumors swirling about Fifty Shades of Grey casting, we’ve just heard another one to add to the mix: Dakota Johnson. The Wrap reports that the 23-year-old is the latest actress in talks to play Anastasia Steele.
Although you may not have heard her name before, you’ve probably seen her face — or at least her parents’ faces. Dakota’s mom is Melanie Griffith and her father is Don Johnson!
She made her film debut in mom’s Crazy in Alabama in 1999 and has worked as a model. Most recently, she starred on the short-lived Ben and Kate.
The part of Anastasia is a super hot topic in Hollywood at the moment with seemingly everyone being thrown into casting discussions. Skins star Kaya Scodelario was an early favorite before she expressed her disinterest, as was Gilmore Girls's Alexis Bledel. Jennifer Lawrence is also a fan favorite.
The most recent potential Christian to have his name thrown around is Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam, who previously got it on on-screen in the UK version of Queer as Folk. Fast and the Furious staple Paul Walker's name has been whispered in casting gossip sessions, too.
Robert Pattinson was reportedly in talks with E.L. James (she even went to his Great Gatsby themed birthday soiree), but hype around his playing Christian has subsided a bit. Vampire Diaries's Ian Somerhalder is a fan favorite to play Christian, but it seems unlikely that he'll be our leading man. We do know, however, that Dakota won't be reuniting with her former Social Network co-worker on this one, since he told Playboy that "it's just mommy porn." Arrow's Stephen Amell has rejected any rumors that he'll be starring.
Regardless of who's going to be deflowering and tying up whom, the film is scheduled to be released on August 1, 2014 and will be directed by Nowhere Boy director Sam Taylor-Johnson.
Certainly, whoever gets the role will have to be comfortable getting naked on screen and doing some pretty kinky stuff, since the books are chock-full of graphic sex scenes. But considering that we first noticed Dakota when she was getting it on with Justin Timberlake in The Social Network, we’d say she’s uniquely qualified to take it to the next level. Anastasia is written as a dark-haired, pale-skinned, blue-eyed, pretty girl, so all Dakota would have to do to fit the part is dye her blonde locks.
What do you think, would Dakota be a good choice for the role of Anastasia Steele?
