When Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) locked lips in New Girl Season 2, viewers everywhere were thrilled to see these two wonderfully quirky characters finally acknowledge the chemistry that has existed between them since day one.

However, even though fans of the show anticipated the Nick and Jess lip lock with a level of excitement harkening back to the days of Friends’’ Ross and Rachel, it turns out the pivotal moment came as a complete surprise to the writers and actors on the show.

During the Aug. 19 episode of Sundance Channel’s series The Writer’s Room, Jake sits down with show creator Liz Meriwether, and executive producers Brett Baer and Dave Finkel to discuss the epic smooch.

“The kiss happened quickly all of the sudden...it was a crazy episode,” Jake revealed in the clip via Entertainment Weekly.

“We wanted it to be messy, we wanted it to feel organic,” Liz added before noting that “there’s actually so much story that comes from people obviously hooking up.”

Still, it’s interesting to note that the now famous kiss almost didn’t exist, at least not in the way viewers saw it eventually play out.

“Originally when we broke it, Schmidt kissed Jess at the end of the episode as just a big comedy thing and that wasn't working so when we table read there was no kiss,” Brett revealed. “We got to this moment where the whole episode had built all of this energy between these two characters and we looked at eachother and we were like, ‘Now we’re lying not to do it.’”
