Meet the new face of Bruce Wayne.
Two-time Oscar winner Ben Affleck will play Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, taking over the role of the Caped Crusader from Christian Bale (who starred in the previous three Batman films under director Christopher Nolan).
Punny Twitter users have already popularized a "Batfleck" hashtag. And indignant Facebook users have planned a mass suicide at Comic-Con in 2014 — though we're pretty sure they're not serious.
The 2015 film, reportedly titled Batman vs. Superman, will bring together two of DC Comics' most popular superheroes, as Ben's Bruce Wayne will join Henry Cavill's Clark Kent, aka Superman — the first time these comic-book legends will share the silver screen.
Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is returning to helm the second installment in the rebooted franchise — and announced at Comic-Con in July that the next film will feature the Dark Knight.
As quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, Zack had nothing but praise for the actor:
"Ben provides an interesting counterbalance to Henry's Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him."
Ben co-writing (and starring in) Good Will Hunting, directing (and starring in) Argo, and headlining blockbusters like Armageddon and Pearl Harbor. This won't be the first time he's played a superhero, as he also starred in 2003's Daredevil.
And on the homefront, Ben is the husband of eight years to actress and Daredevil co-star Jennifer Garner, with whom he has three children.
