Iron Mike Tyson may be one of the toughest competitors in the ring, but it’s off the ropes where he’s fighting what may be his most fearsome opponent yet.
ESPN reports that during a post fight conference at Verona, NY’s Turning Stone Casino, where Mike was making his debut as a boxing promoter, the legendary athlete told a crowd of reporters that he’s battling an addiction to alcohol.
“I’m negative and I’m dark and I want to do bad stuff,” said Mike, who revealed that he’s in the process of making amends to those he’s hurt in the past, including estranged former mentor Teddy Atlas.
“I hate myself. I’m trying to kill myself… [but] I made myself proud of myself, and I don’t do that a lot,” explained Mike of his steps toward a sober life..
“I want to change my life. I want to life a different life now. I want to live my sober life now. I’m on the verge of dying because I’m a vicious alcoholic… I haven’t drank or took drugs in six days, and for me, that’s a miracle. I’ve been lying to everybody else who think I was sober, but I’m not. This is my sixth day. I’m never going to use again.”
