Phil Coulson met his maker in The Avengers when Thor’s brother Loki stabbed him, but the respected character lives on — somehow — in Joss Whedon’s highly-anticipated TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuting on September 24 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

Apparently exactly how Coulson is alive will play out over the course of the first season, with Joss only revealing earlier this month at the 2013 Summer Press Tour that the creative team plans to draw that mystery out “over several episodes."

Colson’s portrayer, actor Clark Gregg reveals that Joss called him to explain how his character is still alive, and he totally supports it. "I hung up the phone very deeply on board," Clark admitted.

Executive producer Jeph Loeb clarifies that there were never plans to have a show without Clark’s crucial character, "There was never going to be a show called Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. without Clark."

According to a recent spoiler from E! Online, Colson’s resurrection will be explained in the pilot, thought there is still more about this intriguing character we don’t know. “There are secrets about his death that even Coulson is completely unaware of,” the site reports.
