The world learned this week that actress Dakota Johnson will take on the coveted role of Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey, but now The Hollywood Reporter that the 23-year-old Hollywood royalty wasn’t the first choice for the role.
Shailene Woodley, the 21-year-old Golden Globe nominee — who is also known for her role as Amy in Secret Life of the American Teenager — was a frontrunner for the part, THR reports, but ultimately ended up turning it down.
It appears that author E.L. James, who was heavily involved in casting for the movie, really wanted to see Shailene taking on the leading role. For her part, Shai was not afraid of the film’s infamous nudity or explicit sex scenes, but her starring role in the upcoming Divergent franchise ended up making her unavailable for the role.
Divergent opens March 21, and Shai had conflicting press obligations that made her unable to work Fifty Shades into her schedule.
THR says that the studio at first worried that Dakota was too much of an unknown to take on the role of Anastasia. Up until now, her only main role has been on the short-lived FOX comedy Ben and Kate. Other actresses reportedly in the running for Ana were Elizabeth Olsen, Imogen Poots, Alicia Vikander, and Felicity Jones.
