The awesome movie roles just keep on coming for Robert Pattinson, who just landed a co-starring role in the upcoming James Dean-centric film Life.

In the film, about the real-life friendship between James Dean and a photographer named Dennis Stock, RPatz will surprisingly not be playing the iconic film star! Instead, the role will be played by Dane DeHaan, and Rob will play a photographer for the Magnum Agency named Dennis Stock, who was tasked with shooting photos of Dean for Life Magazine in the 1950s.

The movie will follow the two young men’s friendship as they traveled between Los Angeles, New York, and James Dean’s hometown of Indiana on assignment, shortly before James Dean was launched to stardom with his turn in East of Eden in 1955 — the same year he died. In fact, Dennis Stock was the photographer who took the most iconic picture of James Dean of all time: The image shows Dean on a rainy day in Times Square with his collar popped, a cigarette in his mouth (You probably have the postcard somewhere).

Rob is currently working with Mia Wasikowska on Map to the Stars, a film about a dysfunctional Hollywood family, with Mia as the pyromaniac daughter and Rob as the limo driver and aspiring actor she befriends — and gets romantical with. Dane most recently starred as Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, due out in 2014.

Are you excited to see Rob throwback to the 1950s? Are you surprised he’s not playing James Dean?
