In Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut, Don Jon, the actor portrays a muscly guy from New Jersey whose addiction to porn affects his ability to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.
The role is certainly a step away from JGL’s usual fare, which has often found him as a lovesick puppy dog with glorified views of relationships. (500 Days of Summer, anyone?)
No fan of the 32-year-old actor could argue his range, but certain aspects of his personal life have stolen focus away from his on-screen talents. One question in particular has been circling the Internet for years: Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt gay?
In OUT magazine’s October 2013 issue, Joseph addresses the rumors the same way he always has — by not addressing them at all.
Joe and the mag discuss a video he shot in 2006, in which he and a male friend are hounded by the paparazzi. In typical JGL fashion, he turns his camera around the photogs and tries to strike up a conversation.
After a bit of back and forth, one of the paparazzi reveals their motives for snapping Joseph’s picture: “We saw a young star with another guy, and it’s implied that there’s something going on. The whole gay thing — it intrigues people.”
So will Joseph Gordon-Levitt finally set the record straight on his sexual orientation? Not on your life. “That would be really tacky,” he says. “[The media] would win if I had to clarify.”
