We would think that getting named Miss America would mean you wouldn't have to hear harsh criticism about your body. Apparently, we'd be wrong.
Mallory Hagan began her reign as Miss America 2013 in January, and now the New York Post is reporting that current Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, was recorded making negative comments about Mallory's figure.
Nina was allegedly recorded on July 16 in a hotel room in Staten Island, where she was celebrating with friends after having just been crowned Miss New York. The conversation was reportedly recorded by a fellow beauty queen in an adjacent room.
On the tape, Nina can reportedly be heard saying that Miss America Mallory Hagan is "fat as f**k." Yikes.
Here's what a source is saying about the incident: "[Nina] invited friends back to her hotel room after her win. A girl in the next room overheard their conversation, and was so offended she decided to tape part of it. A friend of Davuluri was supposedly heard making racist remarks, and [Nina] is allegedly heard on the tape blasting Miss America, ‘Mallory’s fat as [bleep].’ The recording has been making the rounds of pageant contestants and officials.”
“Her comments were brought to the board of the Miss America pageant," adds the source. Meanwhile, a rep for the Miss America pageant issued a statement, saying, "The situation was investigated fully back in July, and there is no validity to the story whatsoever."
For her part, Nina sent Mallory a Facebook message to deny that she was the person who made the offending remarks. "I want to apologize for the awful statements made by people in my room," Nina wrote. "There were people who claimed to be my supporters and said things I never agreed with, nor supported... I was never a part of the words or statements that may have been hurtful."
Mallory appeared on Anderson Live back in March to address criticism about her reported weight gain since winning the pageant. "I think that I'm human... and I'd like to equate getting ready for the Miss America pageant, you know, to getting ready for a boxing match," Mallory said at the time. A new Miss America will be chosen on September 15, 2013.
Notably, Nina herself had lost 60 pounds prior to getting named Miss Syracuse and then Miss New York.
Note to self: Being Miss America is not as carefree as we thought. So maybe we won't try to become it after all.
