Jada Pinkett Smith may be the matriarch of one of Hollywood’s most clean-cut families, but underneath it all, it seems there may be a darker side to the Fresh Princess that fans haven’t seen.

Following her 42nd birthday last week, Jada took to Facebook to write a message to fans, revealing what she’d learned during her time as an actress, mother, and wife, telling them:

Yesterday I turned one year older, and I reflected on where I have been and where I am now. What I learned about myself is this, when I was younger I was not a good problem solver, meaning I had a very difficult time with dealing with my problems in life. I had many addictions, of several kinds, to deal with my life issues, but today, at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life's inevitable obstacles. I have become a good problem solver with those tools, and I am damn proud.”

While Jada never specified what her addictions had been, she went on in another post to offer advice to friends experiencing marital difficulties, perhaps hinting that her own marriage to husband Will Smith was going more smoothly than it had been in the past, no longer plagued by the rumors of divorce and open relationships that had hung over the couple in recent years.

“Someone asked me the other day why do people stay with people who treat them bad?

To me, the answer is simple,” wrote Jada. “They stay because they don't believe they deserve to be treated better… You deserve the best and never forget it.”
