News that the Bridget Jones book series would be getting a third installment broke last year, but only now are we getting details about what to expect. And, you guys, it’s not good news.
Mark Darcy — aka Colin Firth, aka the man of our dreams — is dead. D-E-A-D. Dead.
Last we checked, Bridget Jones, played by Renée Zellweger in the movie adaptations, was happily engaged to the hard-to-please barrister. So what happened? Well, according to an excerpt from the next book — Mad About the Boy, set to publish in the US on October 15 — Bridget’s now a 51-year-old widow and mother of two.
We guess we should have seen this coming. After all, author Helen Fielding did tease way back in 2012 that “the new novel is set in present-day London with an entirely new scenario for Bridget.” What could be a more topsy-turvy scenario than the snarky Brit trying online dating?
But despite the gloomy situation Bridget finds herself in, Helen promises that the new novel won’t be all doom and gloom: “If people laugh as much reading it as I am while writing it then we’ll all be very happy.”
Laugh? How could we laugh through all these tears?
And that’s not all, you guys. A third movie is reportedly in the works, with both Colin and Renée interested in reprising their roles. Although it’s unclear if the third movie will mirror the third book’s story line, if Colin Firth dies on camera...no, just no.
